Asteroid Exploration & Mission Critical Disaster Recovery

Overview

This project supported a mission to collect data from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft passing by the surface of Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid. OSIRIS-REx is set to collect soil samples and transmit data to help scientists understand how planets formed, life began and how to prevent an asteroid-Earth collision. The 3RP team implemented critical Oracle database best practices and disaster recovery plans to ensure the security and safety of the data transmitted from the satellite back to Earth.

Approach and Challenges 

Approach:

  • Assess current Oracle primary and backup database environments
  • Create and validate switchover scripts
  • Review and incorporate disaster recovery best practices to minimize downtime and data loss associated with a database failure
  • Provide detailed disaster recovery steps and timeframes including compressed Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO)
  • Ensure seamless collection, movement, security and recovery of data received from space between the primary and secondary Oracle databases

Challenges:

  • Primary and secondary systems ran from two versions of virtualized Oracle database appliances, which required integration to provide a seamless data backup and recovery process
  • With a fixed satellite landing date, the project had no margin for error on delivery

Solution 

The 3RP team delivered a robust and improved disaster recovery plan to ensure irreplaceable data from outer space is securely backed up and never lost.
Our team implemented best practices to manage and receive data between the primary and secondary Oracle databases to keep this mission on track now and in the future.
